A LIFELONG PASSION

Canadian-born flutist Diana Morgan has established herself as a versatile orchestral musician and soloist from her formative years through to her professional career. Her training with former principal flutists of the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic has given her a number of international opportunities. Her teacher and mentor Jeanne Baxtresser writes,

“Diana Morgan is a stunning flutist with a brilliant technique, a rich and beautiful tone and very strong musical instincts. AWARDS, EXPERIENCE & RECOGNITION

Diana Morgan has played with Southern California’s top orchestras, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Santa Barbara Symphony, Pacific Symphony, and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. 

Diana has performed with Gustavo Dudamel, John Williams, Nas, Ben Folds, Ludwig Göransson, The Indigo Girls, The Who, John Adams, The Beach Boys, Andrea Bocelli, David Foster, Robert Glasper, Diana Krall, Esperanza Spaulding, and many more. 

Diana has performed at numerous festivals, including Mainly Mozart, Arizona MusicFest, the Ojai Music Festival, the Artosphere Festival, and Spoleto Festival USA. She has played in commercials, major motion pictures, and can be heard playing on the ABC series Fresh Off the Boat, and on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Diana won the University of Southern California Concerto Competition, the TD Canada Trust Festival Competition, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition, the Wilfrid Laurier Concerto Competition, and the Ken Murray Concerto Competition where she performed with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra at the Centre in the Square.

Passionate about chamber music, Diana is a founding member of the classical/jazz trio "The Upside”, winners of the 2014 Beverly Hills Auditions. She appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group conducted by John Adams as part of the Green Umbrella Series. 

Further chamber experiences include appearances with the internationally renowned Penderecki String Quartet at the Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound. Their performance of Garland (2005 winner of the Jules Leger Prize for New Chamber Music) by prominent Canadian composer Linda Caitlin Smith was recorded for CBC Radio Two. In addition, Diana has recorded and performed with the Canadian Chamber Ensemble for the New Orchestra Series and has appeared at the Perimeter Institute for the Mechanics of Art Series.

A multifaceted musician, Diana enjoyed playing on her first major motion picture score, The Soloist. She can also be heard on the albums of Juno Award-winning hip-hop artist Shad K (TSOL, 2010 and The Old Prince, 2007) and can be heard playing piccolo on “Fresh Off The Boat” (Season 2: episodes 2 and 23).

FROM STUDENT TO TEACHER

Diana graduated from the University of Southern California with a Graduate Certificate in Performance from the studio of Jim Walker, former principal flute of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, first-call studio musician and member of the jazz group Free Flight.

Previously Diana studied with world-renowned flutist and revered pedagogue Jeanne Baxtresser, former Principal Flute of the New York Philharmonic, and with Alberto Almarza at Carnegie Mellon University where she received her Master’s degree. Diana completed her undergraduate degree with Dr. Amy Hamilton at Wilfrid Laurier University and graduated with high distinction.

Diana is a flute and piccolo faculty member at the Colburn Community School of Performing Arts. Since 2011, she has adjudicated for the Colburn Conservatory flute auditions. Diana has been a guest clinician at the California State University, Northridge, University of Maryland, Occidental College, San Diego Flute Guild, Montana Flute Association, and Idyllwild Arts Academy. Since 2010, Diana has been the program director and faculty member at Jim Walker’s Beyond the Masterclass
